What Does Fall Prevention Really Look Like?

We think it's exercises and weights with sweat in places we don't want to think about.

But it really looks like twenty older adults gathered in a community room on a weekday afternoon.

It looks like stories shared, risks uncovered, and myths unlearned.

It looks like a room full of people realizing they aren’t alone.

Last week, Aurora Independence partnered with the Upper Merion Senior Services Center to host a special screening of Saving Claire, a powerful documentary that follows one woman’s journey after a life-changing fall.

But this wasn’t just a film screening. We used this event as a springboard for something deeper.

Together, we walked through a visual fall risk activity that helped attendees identify real-life safety hazards in a home setting. We shared strategies for staying safe that go beyond the usual advice, highlighting small but meaningful changes like improved lighting, threshold ramps, and grab bars.

More importantly, we created space for conversation, questions, and community support.

My favorite exchange of the day:

Them: "We will make changes when we are ready!"

Me: "I hear that! No one wants to be pushed into something they aren't ready for! For the group, I am curious, when will you know you are ready?"

The Group sheepishly answers: "Probably when something bad happens..."

Me: Cue my knowing look.

Because at Aurora Independence, we believe fall prevention isn’t a one-size-fits-all checklist.

It’s not just about equipment or exercises, it’s about connection. Empowering people with the knowledge, tools, and confidence to stay safe in their homes, without sacrificing autonomy or dignity.

A big thank you to UMSSC for hosting us, and to everyone who showed up with curiosity, honesty, and a willingness to learn.
